People Place Purpose exhibition in Alkmaar

24.08.2016 - Events

Recent public projects by Mecanoo will be featured in the exhibition People Place Purpose in Theatre De Vest in Alkmaar. The exhibition, organised in collaboration with AIA (Architectuur Informatiecentrum Alkmaar) will be opened on Thursday 8 September with a lecture by Francesco Veenstra.

Mecanoo architecten, officially founded in Delft in 1984, creates culturally significant buildings with a human touch. Founding architect and creative director Francine Houben, sees the office as a symphony orchestra, bringing together urbanism, landscape, architecture, restoration and interior design in a coherent way. The practice has won many international awards and its design for the Library of Birmingham was nominated for the prestigious Stirling Prize in 2014.

The exhibition consists of models and movies of remarkable large and small public projects. Each design is founded on observation of people, location, culture and climate. The analysis amounts to designs that respond to current needs, yet which are also prepared for (un)predictable change.

The opening event will include a lecture by Francesco Veenstra, partner at Mecanoo. Francesco has contributed to many projects, including the Library of Birmingham, the Delft Municipal Offices and Train Station, and Museum Kaap Skil - all of which are on display in Alkmaar.
