Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol wins European Hotel Design Award

24.11.2016 - Project updates

Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol was named winner of the European Hotel Design Award, category Newbuild, at the awards ceremony in London on Monday November 21, 2016. The hotel was designed by the acclaimed Dutch practice Mecanoo architecten and developed and owned by Schiphol Real Estate. With its iconic cubic mould structure and diamond-shaped windows, the new Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol is an impressive landmark.

The spectacular atrium, featuring a 42-metre high glazed roof, is the main meeting area and forms the heart of the hotel. “The hotel cleverly responded to the clients brief, creating a new landmark building as part of the Schiphol masterplan,” the jury commented. “[It’s a] bold architectural statement in an airport location.”

The annual European Hotel Design Awards celebrate exceptional hotel design and architecture, honouring the work of industry leading architects and designers, and the projects they create with hotel developers, owners and operators. The awards acknowledge creativity, innovation and excellence, and are judged by a panel of industry experts and peers. The Schiphol Hilton prevailed over shortlisted projects from Istanbul, London, Munich, Mallorca, and Sarajevo.

“It is a great honour to receive the European Hotel Design Award. The jury has appreciated the elegant forms, use of daylight and perfect acoustics,” said Ellen van der Wal, partner Mecanoo architecten. “We have been able to accomplish our dream of creating a spacious, welcoming hospitality experience through collaboration with the inspiring clients, users and other partners in this project. We’re very grateful for their confidence and perseverance.”

The new Hilton Amsterdam Airport Schiphol opened its doors in December 2015.  With 433 rooms and 1,700 square metres of meeting and event space, it is the airport’s leading conference hotel.

The hotel is connected to the airport by a covered walkway which brings travellers directly from the terminals into the atrium.
