Mecanoo presents vision for Milan’s railway yards

04.04.2017 - Events

Mecanoo has presented a visionary approach for the scali of Milan, the railway yards. Redevelopment of seven former railway yards encompasses the transformation over one million square meters of brownfield into urban areas with housing, offices, retail and cultural institutions.

In the vision of Mecanoo, the creation of multimodal transport hubs will decrease the reliance on cars thereby making room for a network of biking lanes, pedestrians paths and green public space. The connecting infrastructure of the railway yards is used to improve the mobility of Milan in order to generate new opportunities for the city as a whole.

The study is part of a city-wide public consultation to define priorities for the scali and was initiated by FS Sistemi Urbani, in collaboration with the Municipality of Milan and the Lombardy Region. In December 2016, over 2,000 people participated in a large-scale multidisciplinary workshop with five architectural teams: Stefano Boeri, Benedetta Tagliabue, MAD architects, Cino Zucchi Architetti, and Mecanoo.

The outcome of the consultation will be exhibited to the public from 4-9 April 2017 at the Fondo Corsa, next to passarello Biki in Porta Genova. A panel discussion with all design teams will take place on Thursday evening (April 6). The Mecanoo team will present a more in depth overview of their vision during a session on Wednesday (April 5) at 7 pm.
