Kunstuur to focus on MLK Library renovation

20.04.2017 - Events

On Sunday April 23, 2017, Kunstuur, the weekly art and design programme on Dutch television, will focus on Mecanoo’s renovation of Washington DC’s central library. The library was designed in the 1960s by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and named after Martin Luther King Jr.

The programme follows architect Francine Houben as she investigates the past and present in order to design a world-class library. Houben delves into the archives, meets contemporaries of Mies and King, speaks to current visitors of the library, and participates in a Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Peace Walk. During her quest, both the building's namesake and the original architect look over her shoulder critically.

Kunstuur will be broadcasted by AVROTROS on television channel NPO2 and start at 17:40. More information here.

On Thursday May 18, 2017, the full-length one-hour documentary “A Legacy of Mies and King” will be screened at Het Nieuwe Instituut in Rotterdam.
