Manchester arts centre HOME designed by Mecanoo tops out

27.03.2014 - Project updates
On 27 March, the official topping out was celebrated for HOME, the new multi-artform complex in Manchester city centre designed by Mecanoo. The ceremony took place in a rooftop ‘living room’ that had been lifted to the highest point to mark the occasion. Construction of the £25m building is progressing well, moving towards completion on time and on budget with opening planned in spring 2015.

HOME is the newest high profile addition to Manchester’s renowned cultural scene and central to the city’s tourism offer. With its own unique place within the cultural landscape, HOME is predicted to receive 500,000 visits per year. In keeping with this high profile, Mecanoo designed HOME to be an iconic arts venue that is both dynamic and intimate.

Its distinctive triangular shape with rounded corners and glass façades makes the cultural centre stand out from the commercial developments that surround it. HOME features a 500-seat theatre; a 150-seat flexible theatre; a 500m2, 4m high gallery space; five cinema screens; digital production and broadcast facilities; a café bar and restaurant.

Sir Richard Leese, Leader of Manchester City Council, said: “This event marks another milestone in the development of one of Manchester’s key regeneration areas. HOME is not just First Street’s cultural heart but is acting as a catalyst to further transformation of the area, attracting other investment and jobs and making a significant contribution to the vibrant mix which makes Manchester a desirable place to be for residents, visitors and businesses alike.”
