Competition design for Perth City Hall unveiled

12.06.2017 - Project updates

Mecanoo’s vision for the redevelopment of the Perth City Hall has gone on show for members of the public. The exhibition features the initial design concepts created by five shortlisted architectural firms for the transformation of Perth City Hall into a cultural attraction.

By bringing the building back into public use, the city aims to increase its capacity to display collections of national significance, house major touring exhibitions and feature national and overseas loans. Members of the public are invited to share their comments on the designs with Perth and Kinross Council, who will ultimately select the winning proposal.

Mecanoo envisions the project as means to create a new gateway to Perth; to its history and its pride. The scheme proposal seeks to re-activate Perth City Hall by a number of ‘light touch’ interventions that open the building up to the public realm at ground level and provide a flexible platform to display Perth and Kinross Council’s permanent and temporary collections. The integral design is about transparency, permeability, accessibility and creating an interactive environment for all.

To provide better understanding of the proposal, Mecanoo has created a series of virtual reality viewpoints, allowing anyone to experience the design.
