Mecanoo is proud to celebrate a major milestone with the renovation of De Nederlandsche Bank’s headquarters in Amsterdam, which has received both BREEAM Outstanding and WELL Platinum certifications. These internationally recognised benchmarks highlight the building’s exceptional performance in sustainability and user well-being.
In collaboration with DGMR, Sweco, SPIE Nederland, Stevens Van Dijck, and Pieters Bouwtechniek BV, Mecanoo transformed the historic complex into a future-ready, circular, and inviting environment. The WELL-certified interior supports health, focus, and collaboration with abundant greenery, daylight, and natural materials such as FSC-certified timber and coloured PET felt.
At the same time, the BREEAM Outstanding score reflects a highly sustainable approach: over 80% reductions in energy use and CO₂ emissions, reuse of dismantled materials, integration of solar and geothermal energy, and an advanced double-glazed façade with sunshading and heat recovery.
The renovation also redefines how a central bank can engage with the public. With its improved accessibility, welcoming atmosphere, and panoramic event spaces in the tower, the building strengthens the relationship between DNB and the city of Amsterdam—setting a new standard for civic architecture.
This project shows that sustainable Dutch architecture can be both impactful and inspiring. Mecanoo is honoured to have helped realise this vision.
