We are proud to announce that the Lawson Centre for Sustainability at Trinity College, University of Toronto, has been recognised as a North America Winner in the Holcim Foundation Awards 2025.
The Holcim Awards honour projects that push the boundaries of sustainable design and construction across the globe. The 2025 edition highlights twenty exemplary projects on five continents that demonstrate innovation, circularity, and social inclusion. The regional Grand Prizes will be announced in Venice on 20 November 2025.
Designed by Mecanoo in collaboration with RDHA, the Lawson Centre for Sustainability redefines what a university building can be. Conceived as a living laboratory, the Centre integrates academic life, student residence, and sustainable performance into one cohesive whole.
At the heart of the design lies the ambition to foster community and environmental stewardship. The hybrid structure combines mass timber, steel, and concrete, balancing strength, warmth, and adaptability. The building is targeting LEED Platinum and CaGBC Zero Carbon certification, showcasing an integrated approach to low-carbon construction.
Its high-performance façade maximises energy efficiency while allowing abundant natural light to flood the interiors. Geothermal energy, on-site renewables, and rainwater harvesting systems reduce operational impact. Inside, the expressive use of exposed timber connects occupants to nature, while generous communal spaces and courtyards encourage interaction, reflection, and collaboration.
The Lawson Centre creates a setting where academic pursuits and sustainable living merge seamlessly, reinforcing Trinity College’s mission to prepare future generations for global citizenship and leadership in sustainability.
We extend our warmest congratulations to all Holcim Foundation Awards 2025 winners across the world. Each project reflects a shared commitment to advancing sustainable design, circularity, and equity in the built environment. Together, they represent an inspiring vision of how architecture can address the challenges of our time.
