The Mayor and Aldermen of Rotterdam have approved the ambition plan for the Stadiondriehoek. The transformation, led by Mecanoo, marks an important step toward turning the area surrounding De Kuip into a vibrant urban centre in the south of the city.
Currently characterised by parking and peak activity during match days, the area will evolve into a dynamic district where sport, education, innovation, living and green space are closely integrated. The ambition is to create a place that is active throughout the year, supporting everyday life as well as larger events.
De Kuip and Feyenoord will remain key anchors within the area, complemented by the Topsportcentrum Rotterdam and a renewed Stadionplein as an open and green public space for sport, leisure and informal use. At the same time, the Stadiondriehoek will develop into a hub for education and technological innovation, centred around a new AI Data Campus that brings together vocational, higher and university education and strengthens connections with the technology sector.
The plan also introduces a mix of housing, with between 2,500 and 3,000 homes, including a significant number of student residences. Combined with existing and new leisure and entertainment programmes, this will support a lively and diverse urban environment.
Strategically positioned between surrounding neighbourhoods and ongoing developments within Stadionpark along the river Maas, the Stadiondriehoek will act as an important connector within the city. Improved accessibility, including a new railway station, tram lines and a planned city bridge, will further integrate the area into Rotterdam’s wider urban network.
As part of the broader Stadionpark vision and Feyenoord City 2.0 masterplan, the development contributes to the transformation of Rotterdam’s eastern flank, where thousands of new homes, facilities and green spaces are planned. Ongoing participation with residents and stakeholders ensures that the ambitions are shaped collectively and support a future-proof and inclusive urban district.
