Mecanoo has been appointed as design partner for Hanzehuis, Zutphen’s new centre for culture, knowledge and exchange. Following a European tender procedure, the commission has been formally awarded to Mecanoo, together with structural engineer abt and building services consultant Nelissen.
The appointment marks the transition from preparation to design. Having contributed to the project’s preparatory phase, Mecanoo will now develop the design in close collaboration with Hanzehof, Muzehof, Bij de Bieb and the Municipality of Zutphen. Together, the team will translate the centre’s programme and ambitions into spaces that bring cultural activities, learning and community life together.
The preliminary design is scheduled for completion in February 2027, followed by the final design in July 2027 and subsequent technical development. Construction is expected to begin in mid-2028, with the opening planned for January 1st, 2030.
