Project description

The Yenikapi New Gateway in Istanbul was designed in collaboration with Cafer Bozkurt Architecture. The new transport hub for trains, subways and boats connects the city centre with inland Turkey and the rest of Europe, with plans to handle 1.7 million travellers daily.

Rare archaeological finds from historic Istanbul unearthed during the construction of the railway will be housed in Archaeo Park, which features a museum and city archive.

The vision for the urban plan and architecture joins Yenikapi with the surrounding urban fabric. The total site area measures 27.7 hectares and comprises various parks and public spaces. City walls surrounding the old Byzantine harbour define the perimeters of Archaeo Park.

Located at the tip of the Yenikapi peninsula, the park forms one of the largest green public spaces along the Marmara coast. With their strong identities, the city archive and transport hub gateway become landmarks of Istanbul. Transport, mobility, business, recreation, tourism and culture come together in and around the lively gateway building.

Positioned perpendicular to the urban grid, the horizontal gateway is clearly designed as a portal, guiding the flow of pedestrians between the new city and Archaeo Park. Located further into the park, the city archive forms the focus of the archaeological exhibition.

Flexible floor plans offer numerous possibilities for the building’s programming. The archive features an impressive atrium with two basement exhibition floors below.
