Project description

As the result of a new flood defence program, Waalhalla would be a newly formed cultural and event-centric ecological island in the Waal River with distinct identity, appealing to entire area.

The Waal River passes by Nijmegen, a historic border town in the East of the Netherlands. The site has a long history of conflict, commerce and connection. In addition, the city has a strong identity and is a popular location for summer recreation.

The new master plan was developed considering the success of the existing situation and what could be created to enhance the identity of Waalhalla as a destination for culture, events and recreation.

Waalsprong, an area located on the banks of the river already has large amounts of new housing and commercial space planned. The 71 hectare island would be developed as a river park with additional construction providing flexible space to meet the current and future demands for cultural space in the region.

The island river park would feature an open air theatre, arts centre, rock climbing facilities, cafes, restaurants and camping areas.

The creation of the Waalhalla would form not only a new land mass but also define a framework to cement and nurture the creative industries in the region.
