Project description

With its wide variety of distinct buildings, the Utrecht Science Park is a microcosm of modern architecture. To fit within its surroundings, Mecanoo designed the Life Sciences Incubator (LSI) as a sophisticated building with horizontal layers, while the detailed glazed facade adds a unique touch.

The LSI is a business centre for start-ups and more established companies in the bioscience field and consists of both laboratories and offices. A special feature in the design is the light, central atrium. The ensemble of bridges and staircases with integrated meeting spots has been designed to promote cooperation.

The building is physically connected to the neighbouring incubator, the Alexander Numan Building. Together, they share a common entrance and are designed to work in harmony. By analysing the sustainability score and life cycle costs for each design decision, Mecanoo and Giesbers Ontwikkelen en Bouwen have created a remarkable design.

This is exemplified by the solar controlled glazing and sloping facades which have a positive impact on the sustainability performance and life cycle costs, whilst also contributing to the transparent appearance of the building. The LSI is the first laboratory building with BREEAM Outstanding certification in the Netherlands.
