Mixed Use Centre De Honingraat in Slotermeer houses various social and cultural facilities for the local community. The main entrance has been sculpturally carved out of the building’s corner volume and provides access to the two-storey central hall.
The articulated volume connects to its environment: a seven-storey wall along Slotermeerlaan and a lower volume that connects to schools behind the centre. Daylight flows in from the recessed tree-lined patio in the middle of the building.
The apartments on the upper levels face the green, sloping roof of the lower volume which creates a connection between nature and the built environment, anchoring the volume in the garden city.
All facilities on the ground floor and first floor are accessible from the central hall. The building includes a branch of the Amsterdam Public Library, a community centre, maternity centre, youth centre, and a café. Each part of the centre can be instantly identified by its distinct colour scheme. The vaulted roofs and ceilings, patio and large openings in the facade create light and open interior spaces.
