Project description

The old city centre of Groningen has a clear spatial structure of streets and squares, enclosed by a ring of canals. Over time, urban developments have obscured this structure from the public eye. ‘Space by Space’ is an integral masterplan for Groningen’s public space, which aims to return transparency and calmness to the heart of the city.

The masterplan recognises four different typologies for the city of Groningen: the Managed City in which all elements are well-designed and well-kept; the Characteristic City which emphasises Groningen’s emblematic locations; the Expressive City that makes room for exuberance; and the Hidden City with all the places out of sight.

Every typology contributes to the city as a whole and requires specific solutions when designing the public space.

The extensive study resulted in proposals to restructure the public space, encompassing the pavement, street furniture, lightning, parking policy, advertising columns, and waste bins. The plan also sets rules for terraces, street publicity, and shop displays. A pilot project was realised in 1991, when the main hospitality streets in Groningen were refurbished.
