The film deals with the modernisation of Washington DC’s central library, which was designed in the sixties by architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and named after Martin Luther King, Jr.
The film follows architect Francine Houben as she investigates the past and present in order to design a world-class library. Francine delves into the archives, meets contemporaries of Mies and King, speaks to current visitors of the library, and participates in a Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial Peace Walk. During her quest, both the building's namesake and the original architect look over her shoulder critically.
What if we use the ‘scali’ – railway yards – and their connecting infrastructure to improve the mobility of Milan in order to generate new opportunities for the city as a whole? This is the main question guiding Mecanoo’s vision for the seven scali of Milan.
Located in a residential area on the outskirts of Córdoba, the city’s new courthouse contains 26 courtrooms, a forensic institute and public services. With the smart integration of a striking design that recalls historic Córdoba and its Moorish influences in a contemporary way, the building adds appeal to its surroundings.
The Kaap Skil Maritime and Beachcombers Museum on Texel Island, transports visitors to the village of Oudeschild in the Golden Age. Dutch traditions such as the reuse of washed-up objects inspired the design of this modest but striking museum building.
The busy Mekel Road, which divided the campus of the Delft University of Technology (TU Delft), is replaced by the eye-catching Mekel Park. Centrally located, the park connects the various faculties of the TU Delft, and in doing so, reflects the interdisciplinary character of the university.
Founded in 1912, the Netherlands Open Air Museum is picturesquely situated in the rolling forested landscape near Arnhem. The museum commissioned Mecanoo to design not only an entrance pavilion but also an indoor exhibition space, thereby making visits to the open-air museum more suited to all weather conditions.

We go back to Lleida in Spain. La Llotja Theatre and Conference Centre officially opened in 2010, adding a new venue for the arts in the region. After six years, Mecanoo went back to see the project. We wanted to see how the building is facing the test of time and how successful the public space has been now that the building is well in use.
On Saturday 28th February 2015, the Delft’s new railway station was officially opened to the public. The station, in combination with municipal offices and the new city hall, sits atop a new train tunnel built in place of the old concrete viaduct that has divided the city in two since 1965. From the outset, Mecanoo’s idea has been to design a station that makes it clear to visitors that they have arrived in Delft.
Located centrally in the St. Laurentius cemetery in Rotterdam, the Roman Catholic chapel sits within the perimeter of a historic chapel from 1869 whose outline is visible from the exposed ruins of the original wall. Inside, the atmosphere feels intimate regardless of the number of people present. The chapel consists of a column-free space wrapped by a continuous, undulating wall raised seventy centimetres off the floor, with a gently curved floating roof above.

In a new short film, Francine Houben takes the opportunity to show more of the project and explain the ideas behind the design. “When you arrive at the station, you really experience arriving in Delft,” she says.
There is hardly any misunderstanding with regard to the ambitions of this project; the park and the arts complex must, with one gesture, give Kaohsiung another face. An international jury chose the design of Mecanoo because of its great imagination, one-ness of the arts center with the park, modern theatre techniques and incorporation of the subtropical climate.
On our recent documentary we go back to Korea to visit Whistling Rock. With such a beautiful mountain landscape surrounding the golf course, it was only natural that this be our design inspiration for the clubhouse, start house and tea houses. The clubhouse reflects a careful balance between a luxurious golf clubhouse with environmental consciousness and site sensitivity.
