Utrecht University has officially selected Berghege Heerkens Bouwgroep as construction team partner for UNIEK. On 17 September 2025, the agreement was signed, marking a key milestone in the transformation of the Van Unnik Building and its surrounding area into a new social and academic heart for the campus.
Led by Mecanoo, the integrated design team is working closely with the university and the construction partner to realise this complex transformation. The collaboration from the earliest stage ensures that technical, economic, and sustainable solutions are developed in harmony, supporting Utrecht University’s ambition to create a building that is exemplary in both circularity and inclusivity.
The Preliminary Design has been completed and now forms the basis for the next development phase. Together with future users, including the Faculty of Social Sciences and the University Administration Office, the team will refine the design into a Final Design and Specifications.
Sustainability and circularity are central to the project. Timber construction, prefabrication, and reuse of materials will play a major role, supported by the use of a materials passport and continuous monitoring of environmental performance. These principles ensure that architecture, sustainability, and social value are closely interwoven.
Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with completion scheduled for 2028.
