The Rotterdam City Council, on Thursday evening 4 December, approved by an overwhelming majority the Final Design (DO) and the implementation budget for the renovation and renewal of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen.
This marks the beginning of a new chapter in 2026: the construction of a place where a world-class collection and stories come together, and where generations meet. Work is scheduled to start at the end of 2026, with the renewed museum opening its doors to the public in 2030.
Connect, Open, Preserve
The museum aims to offer visitors a welcoming and inspiring experience in the renewed building. It is not only about presenting the collection in a safe environment, but also about creating a place where everyone feels at home.
The design by Mecanoo plays a key role in this vision, focusing on a hospitable and inviting entrance, improved logistics and circulation for a smoother flow and greater comfort for the public, the restoration of the characteristic architectural elements by Van der Steur, Bodon and Henket, and the strengthening of the connection between the museum, the city and the Museumpark.
Ina Klaassen, Director of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen: “The renovation and renewal of our beautiful museum can finally begin! Last night was tense and emotional, but fortunately the City Council has taken this historic decision. We look forward to reopening the museum to the public and sharing our stories with future generations. With Mecanoo’s design, we are building an iconic meeting place with international appeal, while remaining firmly connected to the city and its residents.”
